Water Treatment

Regulatory Issues

Upgrade or replace? This choice faces numerous water treatment facility owners as they deal with legislation such as the Safe Drinking Water Act's Disinfectant/Disinfection Byproducts Rule and Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. Although these rules establish important standards to ensure safe drinking water, they also raise significant compliance questions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that more than 23,000 water systems will be affected by just these two rulings, and these affected systems will spend collectively more than $24 billion to come into compliance.

Through their ongoing exchange of information about new regulations and changing technologies, members of Greeley and Hansen's Water Technology Group (WTG) work closely with clients who face these important issues. Rather than look first at facility replacement, the group tries to determine how existing treatment plants can be cost-effectively upgraded to meet emerging regulations. This is a dynamic process as Greeley and Hansen's WTG evaluates the constraints and opportunities of new options and then helps clients determine which are the most appropriate under a given set of existing conditions.
